Described by Bill Bryson as possibly "Britain's best-kept secret", the Offa's Dyke Path runs for an impressive 177 miles (285km) through the borderlands of England and Wales. The name derives from the earthwork constructed by Offa, King of Mercia, who reigned from 757 to 796 A.D. The path is one of the 15 National Trails to be found in England and Wales. The route, from Prestatyn in the North to Chepstow in the South, follows the line of the ancient monument, winding in and out of the two neighbouring countries.
A spectacular long-distance walk, the Offa's Dyke Path traverses varied terrain and offers perhaps the finest walking holiday to be found anywhere in the UK. The trail passes through upland areas which include the Brecon Beacons, Clwydian Hills and the Black Mountains, as well as the more gentle landscapes of the Wye and Severn Valleys. Popular but long enough to accommodate hundreds of walkers without ever becoming crowded, Offa's Dyke provides a perfect mixture of wild scenery, mountain solitude and bustling towns. A particular favourite is Hay on Wye, world renowned 'town of books' - an additional overnight stay here can easily be arranged as part of your walking package. Offa's Dyke offers you wildlife and breathtaking views by day, cosy pubs and Celtic heritage to enjoy in the evenings.
